Yarn weight: Size 3
Skein weight: 3.5oz balls
Skein yardage: 302 yards per ball
Care Instructions: Machine wash in cold water and tumble dry on low heat.

This lovely yarn has an amazing amount of yardage. As you know, crochet can gobble up the yarn and “Simply DK” with 302 yards per ball is a crocheter’s dream as it is quite economical and is a great value.

With the softness, durability and availability of the lovely yarn, the creativity never stops. Since this is a DK weight yarn, it is just about the right weight for almost any hat design. It is also a perfect weight for almost any crochet project from accessories to wearables to home decor.

I love crocheted hats! In fact, I started my crochet design career several years ago with “Crochet A Dozen Hats” that was published by American School of Needleworks. Now that I have found the perfect hat yarn I can go back to my design roots occasionally with a new hat design. Other hat designs using “Simply DK” are in the works. Please check back often to see new designs.

Tutorial – Crochet In The Round

Here is a short tutorial for a crochet technique that is perfect for hats. In this technique that is preferred by Nancy Brown-Designer there is no joining of the rounds. Sometimes referred to as spiral rounds, you simply work in a continuous circle and there is no visible seam.

Practice crochet in the round
For this practice piece you will need a worsted weight or size 4 yarn and a U.S. size H crochet hook. The circles below are crocheted in “Simply Soft” by Caron which produces a gauge of 4 sts = 1″ and 3 rnds = 1″. The gauge is just a guideline as for this practice piece, gauge is not a requirement.

Instructions for crochet in the round (perfect for beanies)
Rnd 1: Beginning at center of circle, ch 2 and work 8 hdc in second ch from hook. DO NOT join, work in continuous rnds.
Rnd 2: Work 2 hdc in each st around = 16 sts.
Rnd 3: Work 2 hdc in each st around = 32 sts.
Rnd 4 (start spiral): * Work 1 hdc in each of next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, just continue in rnds as established until your circle measures approximately 4 1/2″ in diameter or across.
Note #1: You will need a ruler or tape measure (see photo below) to determine the diameter. To make sure the circle measures the desired diameter you will need to measure in a couple of places.
Note #2: This method is fast and easy, no need to move a marker up each rnd.
